Redin tokomatkan alkutaival
Kolme hyvin erilaista koetta. Kolme erilaista kokemusta.
HSKH:n piirimestaruuksissa 6.9.
Piirimestaruus näytti, kuinka tärkeää Redille on kuunnella tehtävä eikä ennakoida ympäristön perusteella.
Hyvinkäällä moni harjoiteltu asia alkoi loksahtaa yhteen.
Juuri tätä kokemuskisaaminen parhaimmillaan on.
Kaiken tämän Redinkin tokoilun alla on sama asia, johon kehittämäni OivaKoira-menetelmä perustuu: HYVÄ KOIRASUHDE.
🐾 SEURAAVA LUKU: VOITTAJALUOKKA
Tokon avoin luokka on nyt valmis.
Siirrymme hallikauteen ja alamme rakentaa voittajaluokan kokonaisuutta kohti koevalmiutta.
To do -listalla on vielä paljon tekemistä.
Peruutus ja sivuaskeleet kehittyvät.Ohjattu nouto tarvitsee vielä malttia noudon suhteen. Luoksetuloon tulee pysäytys. Kauko-ohjaukseen vahvistetaan uutta etutassutekniikkaa.
Ihanaa tokoa, ihanaa!
Miten koira toimii vieraassa paikassa?
- oliko koiran vire sopiva?
- kestikö osaaminen vieraan ympäristön ja häiriöt?
- kantoiko sosiaalinen palkka läpi kokonaisuuden?
- mitä tämä koe kertoo seuraavista harjoituksista?
Redin kolme viimeisintä koetta ovat olleet tästä hyvä esimerkki.
SM-kisat nostivat harjoitteluun häiriöissä työskentelyn ja seuraamisen liikkeiden välissä.
Piirimestaruus toi teemaksi kuuntelemisen ja tehtävään keskittymisen ennakoinnin sijaan.
Hyvinkäällä pääsimme jo kokeilemaan, miten nämä harjoitellut asiat toimivat seuraavassa kisatilanteessa.
Näin kilpailut ja harjoittelu muodostavat jatkumon:
TREENAA → KISAA → ANALYSOI → TREENAA UUDELLEEN.

REDI'S OBEDIENCE JOURNEY – FROM SPRING TO AUTUMN AND A TICKET TO WINNER CLASS
Redi's first proper summer of obedience competitions has been a wonderful journey from small local trials to the Finnish Championships – and back to local trials again.
With my young Border Collie, we started competing in the spring simply to gain experience. First we earned a 1st prize in Beginner Class, followed by a 3rd prize in Open Class, which was enough to give us a ticket to the Finnish Obedience Championships as part of the HiHa team.
After a couple of months of focused training, we found ourselves in the competition ring at the Finnish Championships in Mikkeli in August. A couple of weeks later, in September, we headed to the HSKH District Championships.
Only a week after the District Championships, we were off to another local trial in Hyvinkää – although that one was also a championship event, just not for us, but for the East Uusimaa German Shepherd section.
Three very different trials.Three different experiences.
And between them, a huge amount of valuable information about the kind of obedience dog Redi is growing into.
🐾 FINNISH CHAMPIONSHIPS – EXPERIENCE IN A BIG COMPETITION ENVIRONMENT
The Finnish Obedience Championships on 23 August 2026 were only Redi's third official obedience trial.
In Open Class, we scored 255.5 points and a 2nd prize – just half a point short of a 1st prize.
But more important than the points was what the championship ring taught us.
Redi knew the exercises. What this young dog still needed to learn was how to work in the same way when there was a lot happening around him. In particular, heelwork and maintaining connection with me amid distractions became our next training priorities.
After the Finnish Championships, we introduced a new structure into our training: heelwork between every exercise.
Instead of treating heelwork only as a separate exercise, we started using it increasingly as part of the transitions between exercises. At the same time, this gave Redi plenty of shorter heelwork sequences and lots of effective repetitions.
We also started deliberately gaining experience in different environments. We trained on unfamiliar fields and even took obedience training into the middle of the city. A couple of times we trained on the upper level outside Sello shopping centre and even spent a little time training inside the shopping centre itself.
🐾 DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS – HELLO, LISTEN TO WHAT THE TASK ACTUALLY IS!
At the HSKH District Championships on 6 September, Redi scored 237 points and a good 2nd prize. Our ATD team also won bronze in the District Championships.
This time, the trial highlighted another important issue.
Redi is fast, intelligent and extremely observant of his surroundings. He notices the square, the cone, the dumbbells and all the other possible tasks on the field – and with the enthusiasm of a young dog, he is very happy to make his own conclusions about what we are probably going to do next.
But his guess is not always going to be right.
The square on the field is performed when it is time for the square.
When I give the command for the send-around, the task is the send-around.
The handler tells the dog what the task is.
And so one of Redi's most important training themes for the autumn was born:
FOCUS, LISTEN AND PERFORM.
After the District Championships, we also raised the criteria for the Open Class exercises Redi already knew and started putting more emphasis on performing complete sequences.
We began doing sequences without toys or treats on the field or in my pockets. During and between the exercises, the rewards were social reinforcement, working together and sharing the joy of success.
When Redi did a good job, we celebrated it together. If his concentration wandered elsewhere, I calmly and clearly brought him back to the task.
After completing the class exercises, a fantastic toy reward and a bowl of food were waiting for him.
This helped us build confidence and endurance for performing a complete competition sequence.
🐾 HYVINKÄÄ – A TICKET TO WINNER CLASS
On 12 September, we entered the Open Class ring again in Hyvinkää.
There were plenty of distractions at the competition venue. Lots of German Shepherds meant lots of dogs, barking and voices all around us. As an added bonus, the grass field was slippery after the rain.
This time, I built as relaxed, calm and controlled a competition bubble as possible for Redi, because there was plenty of high-energy activity around us and the deep German Shepherd bass was booming away in the background.
When we arrived, I took care of registration and then went for a walk with Redi. From there, we headed to a quieter patch of grass beside the competition area for a short feel-good training session.
Before entering the ring, we simply spent time together and chilled. Redi was allowed to hang out beside me, but at the same time I expected him to remain calm and not wander off on his own adventures following his nose.
Before our turn, we warmed up carefully and reminded him of the stand in the first exercise, as his rear end had started dropping into a sit in training after the heelwork pattern.
And then we went into the ring to do together what we know how to do.
The result:
297 points Open Class 1st prize
2nd place + Judge's Prize
Wonderful obedience, wonderful – and a ticket to Winner Class for Redi!
🐾 COMPETING FOR EXPERIENCE
With a young dog, every competition ring has been part of the training process.
The Finnish Championships gave us information about working amid distractions.
The District Championships showed us how important it is for Redi to listen to the task instead of anticipating it based on what he sees around him.
In Hyvinkää, many of the things we had been practising started to fall into place.
This is experience-building competition at its best.
A trial does not have to be seen only as a place where a finished performance is measured. It can also be a place where we gain valuable information for the next stage of training.
🐾 THE OIVAKOIRA METHOD – THE DOG-HANDLER RELATIONSHIP AS THE FOUNDATION OF TRAINING AND THE IMPORTANCE OF BASIC TRAINING
Underneath all of Redi's obedience training is the same principle on which the OivaKoira Method I have developed is based:
A GOOD DOG-HANDLER RELATIONSHIP.
Redi is a strong, fast, intelligent and enormously motivated young Border Collie. With him, we can train precise technique, raise the criteria and expect him to perform things he has already learned properly.
But the foundation of the training remains the relationship between dog and handler, together with solid basic training. These build strong mutual trust, reliability in different environments and motivation to work together.
In a good relationship, the dog knows what is expected of him, and the handler can expect the dog to perform behaviours he has already learned.
The handler can be clear and consistent, while at the same time the dog can trust the handler and the work remains something they do together.
With Redi, this is perhaps one of the very best things – and of course, we also have an enormous amount of fun together.
I can reward him with a toy, run with him, praise him and play wildly with him – and I can also tell him that now it is time to focus and do the job properly.
The relationship comes first and remains part of everything we do.
🐾 THE NEXT CHAPTER: WINNER CLASS
Our Open Class chapter is now complete.
We are moving into the indoor training season and starting to build the complete Winner Class programme towards competition readiness.
There is still plenty on our to-do list.
Backward heelwork and side steps are developing.
The directed retrieve still needs more patience around the retrieve itself.
The recall will now include a stop.
In distance control, we will continue strengthening our new front-feet-stationary technique.
We also have the send-around and jump as a new complete exercise. Redi already knows the individual components, and now we need to put them together into the finished exercise.
And so our obedience journey continues – together, determinedly and with joy!
Wonderful obedience, wonderful!
🐾 INFO: COMPETING FOR EXPERIENCE – A TRIAL IS ALSO PART OF TRAINING
Especially with a young dog, you do not necessarily have to wait until you think everything is perfectly finished before entering a competition.
A trial can also be part of the dog's training and a way to gain experience.
A competition situation can give us information that ordinary training cannot always provide.
How does the dog work in an unfamiliar place?
How does the dog respond to unfamiliar dogs and people around it?
Does the connection with the handler remain strong when the surroundings, sounds, smells and events are different from normal training?
How does the dog cope with waiting and the atmosphere of a competition venue?
Can the dog perform familiar exercises as a complete sequence without an immediate food or toy reward?
Has social reinforcement been built strongly enough to carry the dog through the performance?
And what happens when arousal rises or the dog becomes tired?
Competition-style training is an important part of preparing for trials, but even that cannot completely replace real competition experience.
A competition-style training session on a familiar training field with familiar training partners and dogs is a different situation for the dog than a real trial in an unfamiliar place surrounded by unfamiliar people and dogs.
That is why training in different environments and gradually accumulating genuine competition experience are also important parts of developing a competition dog.
After a trial, it is important not to look only at the points and the result.
It is also worth looking at the performance through the handler's eyes:
- What went well?
- What changed compared with training?
- When did the connection with the dog remain strong?
- When did concentration drift?
- Was the dog's level of arousal appropriate?
- Did the dog's skills hold up in an unfamiliar environment and amid distractions?
- Was social reinforcement strong enough to carry the dog through the whole performance?
- What does this trial tell us about what we should train next?
Redi's three most recent trials are a good example.
The Finnish Championships brought working amid distractions and heelwork between exercises into our training plan.
The District Championships made listening and focusing on the actual task – rather than anticipating – a major theme.
In Hyvinkää, we were already able to see how these things we had trained worked in the next competition situation.
This creates a continuous cycle between training and competing:
TRAIN → COMPETE → ANALYSE → TRAIN AGAIN.
A trial does not always have to be the final destination of the training process.
It can also be an extremely valuable milestone along the way.
🐾 OIVAKOIRA OBEDIENCE COACHING
Goal-oriented obedience training involves much more than teaching individual exercises.
Alongside technique, we build complete sequences, transitions between exercises, the ability to work amid distractions, social reinforcement, working without immediate food or toy rewards, competition routines and cooperation between dog and handler.
At OivaKoira, obedience training is always planned according to the team's starting level, the individual characteristics of the dog and the team's goals.
A WHOLE COURSE WORTH OF TRAINING IN ONE PRIVATE LESSON.
Private coaching can focus, for example, on building and polishing individual exercises, competition readiness, distractions, arousal, complete sequences, or analysing issues that have appeared in a trial and planning the next training period.
